Nick has permanent work in the sculpture collection; ‘Methuselah’, and he is the artist for this intriguing show.
It will be three sculptural installations, inspired by WW2 that function as encounter theatres which will be built inside the gallery. This will be a bold, innovative and intergenerational project that uses Harlow’s social spaces in new ways and reflects on the New Town heritage of Harlow. It will appeal to older residents (many of whom came to the New Town from London after WWII and have direct personal recollections to share) and will involve the community in the construction of the artworks. The work will be built on site and will offer a very thrilling opportunity for local students and volunteers to be hands on creating this artwork - the artist will also be creating a selection of prints to accompany the show. There will be Drama and interactive theatre from local groups Live Wire and the spaces will be available for groups to book for activities, meetings even lunch!

'The lost Modernist' - Michael O’Connell. September 19th - December 2013.
Special openings Saturday 28th September, 26th October and 7th Dec all 11- 2pm.
O’ Connell taught in Harlow and Ware and lived and worked with artists locally in Perry Green. He was a key figure in contemporary textile design with his innovative and dynamic unique style of batik and resist dying techniques. He was also influential in post war Britain’s progressive initiatives in education and public institutions. He was commissioned by Sir Hugh Casson (two works in our permanent collection) to create textile wall hangings for the Festival of Britain which took pride of place in the Country Pavilion. His other works were made to celebrate the optimistic post war years where he designed cartoons of the British countryside, farming and all that was great about England.
We will be in a unique position of being the first English gallery to exhibit this retrospective show which will include his collections of textiles silks, garments, cement pots, sketchbooks and ephemera to illustrate his life locally as well as his works.
